Winner, NFM Sound and Vision Award, 2007
Shortlisted, Depict! 07

This film was created through Northern Film and Media’s inaugural Sound and Vision scheme. A series of sixty-second music tracks were posted on line, and directors were invited to submit a synopsis for a film to be made to one of the tracks. I chose Paul Miskin’s Breathe, performed by his group Soznak. Six films were commissioned on the basis of these pitches, including mine. Breather the film went on to win the overall award for best finished film, for which the prize was a budget for director and musician to work together to make another, longer film – which would then lead to Bewick’s Mambo.

Breather turned out to be the first of three films all shot on Tyneside with my friend, the French actor Scali Delpeyrat. It was also the first of many collaborations to come with Bruno Tracq, here as editor.
